Airport X-Ray Machine
Objective: Gilardoni is one of the industry leaders in X-ray technology, founded in Italy during the early 20th century. They came to Politecnico di Milano seeking to revamp their line of x-ray machines.
Team Size: Three
Role: Concept generation, CAD modeling, material selection, manufacturing processes selection, technical drawings
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
With Gilardoni’s current process of machine construction, it is necessary that completely different machines be built, despite only slight differences in the overall construction. Our team’s solution was to create a design that was as modular as possible so as to accommodate many designs.
Our initial efforts, shown to the right, focused primarily on modularity accessible at the customer level. As our design developed, we shifted the focus towards modularity at the manufacturing level, as this was a more useful and cost saving goal for Gilardoni
ENGINEERING DESIGN
By identifying the common parts throughout Gilardoni’s product lines and creating commonalities in construction, our team was able to greatly simplify the way an assembly could work at Gilardoni.
The accompanying image shows how the upper core unit of the system is the same across the three machine, thus consolidating construction tasks. It can then be further modified for their specific tasks.
